Starting August 1, 2026, only Mix Megapol and Rix FM will continue broadcasting nationwide via FM. In addition, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet will launch a new national radio service after being granted a license for the first time. With this decision, the media authority aims to increase content diversity in Sweden’s national radio landscape. While Mix Megapol and Rix FM will maintain their established music-based formats, Aftonbladet’s upcoming station is expected to focus more strongly on journalism and spoken-word programming.

For NRJ, the outcome comes as a major setback. CEO Richard Mazeret described the decision as a “shock announcement” in an official statement. The company expressed concern about its impact on younger audiences, which traditionally form the core of NRJ’s listener base. According to NRJ, up to 1.5 million listeners could be affected by the loss of nationwide FM coverage. Potential job losses are also being discussed as a result of the regulatory decision.
