BBC launches three new DAB music stations: Radio 1 Dance, Anthems and Radio 3 Unwind

For the first time in more than 20 years, the BBC is expanding its radio portfolio with three new DAB stations. After debuting as online streams on BBC Sounds, the channels are now available via digital radio – perfect for listeners who want to enjoy BBC Radio live at home or in the car.

The new BBC stations at a glance

  • BBC Radio 1 Dance – nonstop electronic music with international DJs, live sets and festival highlights.
  • BBC Radio 1 Anthems – the biggest hits and anthems from the 2000s and 2010s.
  • BBC Radio 3 Unwind – classical music and soundscapes designed for relaxation, mindfulness and wellbeing.

Why the BBC is investing in DAB

The launch of the new stations was approved by the UK media regulator Ofcom, reflecting the shift in listening habits: three quarters of the UK population already tune in to radio via digital platforms.

DAB coverage is almost nationwide, reaching 97% of the UK and 87% of major roads. All new cars come equipped with DAB radios as standard.

More variety for listeners

With these new stations, the BBC aims to expand its music offering for younger audiences while also modernising its classical programming. BBC Radio 3 Unwind, in particular, will feature works by emerging British composers and artists.
