Denmark: VLR Launches New Nationwide Private Radio Station

The Danish media group JFM has launched its fourth nationwide radio channel, marking another major step in the company’s investment in digital and online radio.

VLR Jul on Air for the Holidays

For the rest of the year, the new channel will broadcast VLR Jul, JFM’s dedicated Christmas radio station. Starting January 1st, the channel will switch to the regular VLR format — a Soft Adult Contemporary station designed for relaxed listening at work.

VLR began as a local radio station in Vejle and has since evolved into JFM’s flagship easy-listening brand.

Nationwide DAB+ Coverage and Online Streaming

VLR Jul is now available nationwide via the DAB+ commercial radio network (DK DAB1) and as a live online stream.

“The future is digital. While most listeners still use FM, digital listening is growing fast. In just five years, we’ve gone from zero to 45% digital listening — driven by DAB and streaming apps,”
says Søren Bygbjerg, Head of JFM Lyd.

JFM’s Digital Growth Strategy

JFM operates several well-known radio brands, including Radio Viborg, and holds a stake in Radio 4, the private public-service station based in Aarhus.
As Denmark’s second-largest private media company, JFM owns numerous regional newspapers across Jutland and Funen.

Recently, JFM and Berlingske Media announced a strategic partnership:

  • JFM will acquire 30% of Berlingske Media,
  • while Amedia (Norway), Berlingske’s current owner, will take 30% of JFM.

This collaboration aims to strengthen both companies within Denmark’s fast-evolving digital radio and media landscape.
